The Evolving World of Decentralized Identity
This week, Wayne Chang, Founder and CEO of Spruce Systems deepened the conversation around decentralized and digital identity, citing changes to both the way we think about access to information and how technological advancements are creating identity solutions that “champion user control.”
Wayne highlighted the changes in the philosophy of what information is “just enough.” As more of our information becomes represented digitally (a driver’s license or passport, employment or health records, etc.), it could lead to “a privacy disaster” without “setting the right context for the information flows” and creating the tools to execute just that.
He also showcased the initial launch of a suite of products from Spruce Systems, DIDKit and (most recently) Credible, that enable decentralized identity on Tezos, allow projects to integrate decentralized identity, and provide a basic credential wallet for the Tezos ecosystem.
Speaking of the Tezos ecosystem, Wayne also shared how the team is exploring use cases for decentralized identity and verifiable credentials within the ecosystem’s structure. One example was a solution called “baker credentials,” which “represents their [bakers on Tezos] on-chain activity so they can demonstrate their credential whenever they go.”

Audience Q&A Session:
Moderator Alison asks Wayne questions from community members.
[Tezos Baking & Tezos Digital Identity & Decentralized Identity] Q: Can you talk more about baker credentials as a use case on-chain vs. everything done off-chain today? In other words, what can they do on-chain that you consider valuable?
30:38
[Tezos Spruce & Tezos Projects] Q: Could you talk more about Spruce’s ongoing efforts on Tezos ecosystem use cases?
31:26
[Tezos Spruce & Tezos Projects] Q: What can we expect for today’s Credible release?
33:13
[Tezos Spruce & Tezos Projects & Tezos Digital Identity & Decentralized Identity] Q: What’s your reaction to the idea of having vaccine passports? Could that be a use case for digital identity?
37:08
[Tezos Projects & Tezos Digital Identity & Decentralized Identity] Q: Is real-world voting (government) an intended use case for digital identity?
40:36
[Tezos Spruce & Tezos Projects & Tezos Digital Identity & Decentralized Identity] Q: Do you have a few use cases that you want to prioritize?
42:00
[Tezos Spruce & Tezos Projects] Q: What are some next steps that the Tezos community can expect from Spruce?
