Expanding DeFi on Tezos with Bender Labs

What might the future of DeFi on Tezos look like?

This week’s TQuorum Session offered an exciting glimpse of the potential future of DeFi on Tezos. Hugo Renaudin and Jean-Baptiste Dusseaut, Co-founders of Bender Labs joined TQ TezosJacob Arluck to discuss their team’s efforts to tackle one of the biggest obstacles to DeFi growth: a lack of on-chain tokens.

What makes Tezos distinctive? How does Tezos provide effective solutions? According to Hugo, there were many reasons, including the “obvious willingness to work and contribute to the community” he observed in the ecosystem. He also noted that the formal verification and governance model of Tezos lent itself to potentially more widespread adoption in traditional financial institutions in the future.

Jean-Baptiste previewed some of the features of their first open financial protocol built on Tezos, Wrap Protocol, which functions as a bridge between Ethereum and Tezos and allows users to migrate their ERC20 tokens to FA1.2 tokens — an innovation that they hope will increase the volume and variety of assets on the protocol.

Stream this Session to check out the exciting developments that Bender Labs is exploring on Tezos.

Overview of Bender Labs

12:14

Q: Why are you particularly interested in Tezos?

18:36

Q: Could you summarize the initial goal of the Wrap Protocol and how it compares to similar protocols on Ethereum?

25:38

Q: What else are you exploring on the DeFi side? What’s interesting on Ethereum today that you would like to bring over to Tezos?

Audience Q&A Session:

Moderator Jacob asks Hugo and Jean-Baptiste questions from community members.

Q: Will there be a website for Bender Labs? Are there some details of the projects that the team is going to launch on Tezos?

31:37

Q: Why did you choose Bender as the name?

33:07

Q: You mentioned the actor model as an inspiration. Do you plan to build an explicit actor framework on top of Tezos, something like Akka for the blockchain? Or are you saying smart contract interactions are analogous to messages?

36:22

Q: Since you are trying to bring capital markets onto Tezos, what is your take on counterparty risk in general with the DeFi applications you are building?

39:09

Q: Are you guys looking to work with developers who plan to grow their protocols across blockchains?

40:37

Q: Are you working on your Compound style lending dapp for Tezos?

40:50

Q: Who will handle custody of the swapped ERC-20 assets?
